- <Problems caused by bad glow plugs deleted>
-
- The platinum in the glowplug element is important because it
- catalyses the combustion.
-
- It could very well be poisoning of the platinum by something in
- the fuel. Have you switched fuel brands recently?
-
- I never notice anything like this because I burn out plugs almost
- every run 9-)
-
- It could also be a bad batch of element wire - not so much the mix-
- ture of the alloy but maybe it comes "pre-poisoned"...
-
- We use platinum wire in a O2 -> CO2 converter in an apparatus we use
- to extract oxygen from rocks. Once in a while someone will goof up
- and let some waste gases through to the converter and the platinum
- gets poisoned. Often we can reactivate it by scraping with sandpaper,
- but often the contaminant has permeated the wire (apparently Pt is
- pretty permeable). We believe the contaminant is NiF.
-
- By the way, if your liner has worn down to the brass, or even if you
- have an iron piston/liner that is somewhat worn, you can send it off
- for "chroming". A few people do this. Bob Oge comes to mind. I'll have
- to dig up his address... we visited his house during the big Chicago
- thousand dollar meet two weekends ago, so I got to see his chroming
- setup.
-
- He'll chrome the liner and hone it to fit the piston. I believe on
- iron piston/liner sets he chromes the piston as well. I don't think
- its too expensive.. it used to be $15 back in 1983 and is probably
- in the $30 range now.
-
- He'll also do all kinds of engine work. He'll make your Brand X pylon
- motor go like stink, too, if you're willing to cough up some cash...
