- That seems a reasonable definition but..
-
- I have been working on a story (for my own amusement.. I do not know whether
- I have the talent to make it into a publishable novel)
-
- It is about one society thinking it is alone in the Universe making contact
- with a Galactic civilisation. As a result of the contact it discovers
- that its political and military systems are not what it believes them
- to be.
-
- The story is about beliefs and cultural change. It is set in a Galactic
- setting because that setting seems to allow me to describe alternative
- societes. If I write in another setting I would be confined to describing
- my characters in terms of the socio-political structures that actually existed
- in that setting. Putting it on another planet with a fictitous name gives me
- a blank slate.
-
- The story uses all the plot devices that make a Galactic wide civilisation
- possible ie FTL travel and communications, Some 'magical' method of crossing
- the language barrier. I do not want the entire Galaxy populated by Earth
- colonies!! I find it convenient to have a weapon that can stun rather than
- resort to having people knocked on the head whilst looking the other way.
- But I would not say my story is essentially about starships, translators and
- energy weapons with variable settings.
-
- It does not seem to be fantasy because it is not about magic. It does mention
- telepathic races but that is about all.
-
- I call it science fiction/fantasy because I do not know what else to call it.
- Any suggestions?
