- When cleaning audio or video heads, only go in the direction of the
- tape travel; perpendicular cleaning can ruin the head. I also agree
- with only using foam covered Q-tips on VCR's.
-
- When I was a tech, the place I worked at recommended using non-abra-
- sive (important) cleaning tapes regularly, but that those only removed
- maybe 80-90% of the junk. To really clean the heads you have to open
- up the machine.
-
- The real question to me, however, is why are your video heads getting
- so dirty (twice in 2 years)? Are you using cheap tapes? Don't do this.
- Do you re-record on the same tapes over and over? You should change
- tapes every so often (they do wear out). Finally, do you have a sep-
- arate rewinder? Rewinding/fast-forwarding takes a lot out of the VCR
- and should be minimized.
