- Most companies that process a LOT of receipts (such as utility
- companies, credit card companies, etc.) do their own coding of checks:
- the company itself adds the OCR amount at the bottom of the check.
- They often use the amount on the payment slip as the amount they code
- on the check, even if the check doesn't correspond to that. Often, if
- I'm paying an "unexpected" amount (i.e., less than the full balance for
- some reason), I'll write my account number on the check and send it in
- without the slip, for precisely this reason.
