  14.    A word of caution regarding the big propane tank hookup
  15. to Coleman stoves and lanterns.  This story is second-hand,
  16. so please forgive the lack of details.  The parties involved
  17. are fairly bright people, so don't assume that it can't
  18. happen to you...

  20.    Friends of mine were cooking breakfast inside a screened
  21. tent and dripped bacon grease inside the Coleman stove, 
  22. starting a small fire.  Understandably nervous about the
  23. 20 lbs of propane in close vicinity, he shutoff the valve on
  24. the tank, she put the stove on the ground.  Apparently there 
  25. was some amount of propane remaining in the connecting line,
  26. which ran downhill to the stove, creating a large flareup
  27. that melted an entire side of the screened tent.  As I recall,
  28. the stove burner was extinguished previously in attempts to
  29. kill the grease fire.  I guess the propane accumulated in 
  30. the bottom of the stove until it reached the grease flame,
  31. then blew burning grease out of the stove.

  33.    Fortunately no one was injured.  Be aware that this could
  34. happen in many other scenarios, with worse consequences.

  36.    I've seen scary things happen with Coleman fuel also,
  37. so I'm not arguing that it's safer, but the cause of the
  38. problem was more obvious in those cases.
