- Across America wildlife, rivers and wetlands are threat-
- ened. In response, Americans of all ages are taking action
- to preserve our natural heritage. This four-part PBS series
- of hour-long programs features inspiring portraits of concerned
- people working together for the environment--and magnificent
- scenes of the landscapes and animals they are campaigning to
- protect.
- For classroom use, each program includes a separate, de-
- tailed WORKBOOK. They include Class Exercises ("Using Topo-

- Only 1% of America's rivers are protected by the Federal
- Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Dams, channelization, and indus-
- trial development threaten our rivers. From South Carolina's
- Pee Dee to a small unnamed stream in Washington State, people
- are involved in extraordinary campaigns to keep our rivers
- running wild and free. Some are lobbying governments to pass
- legislation; others are monitoring water pollution and contam-
- ination, or sponsoring river clean-up campaigns. They all care
- passionately about the quality of their rivers and their lives.

- Nearly 75% of Americans live within 50 miles of the coast.
- Yet nearly half of the country's coastal wetlands have disap-
- peared. Development, pollution and erosion threaten both human
- and marine life. The costs of shoreline damage due to increased
- development and population may rise to $5 billion by the year
- 2000. It's clear that today "we all live downstream." "Coastal
- Clean-Ups" community organizing and volunteers rescuing injured
- sea mammals are all part of the solution.

- America's swamps and marshes are our richest and least
- understood landscapes. 300,000 acres of wetlands disappear
- each year. They've been filled in to build airports, indust-
- rial plants and housing. But attitudes are changing. Today
- people are working together to protect unique habitat--refuges
- for birds and wildlife, sources of food and rare species of
- plant life, a home and way of life for people like "Alligator
- Annie."

- Sea turtles roamed the pre-historic ocians of the world,
- watching the diosaurs come and go. For over 150 million years
- these giant reptiles, which can grow to 9 feet long, have an-
- nually voyaged thousands of miles through the seas. But these
- once abundant creatures may soon be gone forever as a result of
- commercial exploitation and ocean pollution. With fascinating
- footage, ANCIENT SEA TURTLES: THE LAST VOYAGE? provides an over-
- view of the extraordinary natural history of sea turtles, inclu-
- ding their mysterious migrations and primeval egg-laying habits.
- The video also vividly exposes the major threats to these ancient
- creatures and portrays the international efforts of biologists,
- environmentalists, and others to save them from extinction.
- (All net proceed benefit the Earth Island Institute's Sea Turtle
- Restoration Project.)
-
- "It would be impossible to find a more concise, inform-
- ative, and provocative vidieo than ANCIENT SEA TURTLES:
- THE LAST VOYAGE? It is a hard-hitting, rapid-fire pro-
- gram, giving viewers all the information they need to
- understand the sea turtles' terrible dilemma..."

-
- Our national symbol, the bald eagle, is an endangered
- species. SPIRIT OF THE EAGLE is an entertaining and informative
- program from children that explores this magnificent bird and
- the efforts to protect it. An interracial group of inner city
- children is taken to a wild life island preserve where the eagle
- nests. There, a Native American eagle specialist describes for
- the children the characteristics of this bird of prey and the
- threats to its existence. When the kids venture out, they
- witness spectacular scenes of eagles in flight and discover
- an injured eagle, which they help to save. Through their ad-
- ventures they also gain an appreciation of nature and wilder-
- ness.

- ORCAS--called killer whales--are more feared than under-
- stood. Hiroya Minakuchi is one of a handful of people who have
- studied and photographed these marine mammals in their natural
- habitat. For five years he spent each summer with the 16 orca
- "pods" whose home is the Johnston Straights off the coast of
- Vancouver, Canada. Minakuchi's brilliant cinematography brings
- these whales up close as never before. With the aid of special-
- ly developed underwater cameras, he films spectacular scenes,
- including a personal encounter with several whales who come
- within a few feet. His camera captures orcas above the water,
- breaching and "spy hopping," and a fascinating birth at sea.
- Perhaps most amazing is the rarely filmed "rubbing ritual."
- For reasons not fully understood, once a year whole orca pods
- travel to an isolated beach and rub themselves against the
- underwater pebbles. ORCA gives us an unusual window on these
- magnificent marine mammals and challenges popular misconcep-
- tions about "killer whales." An outstanding program for all
- ages.
-
- "ORCA" is a beautifully shot production, displaying the
- majesty of these magnificent beings. The underwater
- video is dazzling...There is a lot to be learned of
- orcas, but appreciating them is the first step."

- In the last 30 years, the international tuna industry has
- devastated the world's dolphin population. U.S. and foreign
- fishing fleets have killed over six million spinner, spotted,
- and common dolphins needlessly entrapped by deadly "purse
- seine" nets. Despite recent actions by the U.S. tuna industry,
- 50% of canned light tuna found in groceries around the world
- is not yet dolphin safe. Relentless destruction continues to
- push some dolphin communities to the brink of extinction.
- WHERE HAVE ALL THE DOLPHINS GONE? is a beautifully photographed
- documentary. It shows the charm and intelligence of these
- endangered mammals, and vividly documents their cruel slaughter
- with rare footage secretly shot aboard tuna boats by biologist
- Sam LaBudde. All net proceeds of this video will be used by the
- Marine Mammal Fund and the ASPCA in their educational efforts
- to halt the dolphin slaughter.

- GIFT OF THE WHALES is a modern fable about nature for
- younger children. Dan, an 11 year old Native American boy,

- grandfather and a friendly marine scientist introduce him to

- CHANGING TIDES ALONG THE MEDITERRANEAN 1986 * 23 min.
- --------------------------------------
- Produced by Legacy International.
-
- > VHS Sale $45 Rent $30.
-
- CHANGING TIDES is an inspiring example of young people
- actively responding to a pressing environmental problem. For
- thousands of years the Mediterranean Sea maintained a fragile
- ecological balance. But today the by-products of modern indus-
- try have critically disrupted nature's balance. Now this
- important waterway is dying. CHANGING TIDES follows a group
- of students from 14 nations who come to the Mediterranean to
- learn about these environmental problems and to seek solutions.
- With hands-on training and on-site work projects, these young
- people discover the difficulty of harmonizing modern life and
- pressing environmental concerns.
-
- "CHANGING TIDES ALONG THE MEDITERRANEAN offers a unique
- experience for students to look at society and its
- environmental problems from a global point of view...
- should be an integral part of our school curriculum."
