- Dear Friends:
- August 31, 1992
-
- After more than a year as a network that produced quarterly
- mailings on actions around NAFTA, we are now an organization! On
- the weekend of August 1-2, representatives of 10 of the
- organizations most active in the network met in Chicago and formed
- the North American Worker-To-Worker Network (NAWWN).
-
- The decisions made over the weekend were boosted by the presence
- of John Riojas, a new International Vice President of the
- Teamsters; David Johnson, representing the UE, and Julio Cesar
- Guerrero of ACTWU's Midwest Region. Representation from the
- Southwest was strengthened by representatives of La Mujer Obrera
- and Fuerza Unida and from the Southeast by activists from the
- Tennessee Industrial Retention and Renewal Network and Southerners
- for Economic Justice. Also present were UAW Local 879 from St.
- Paul, Minnesota, Labor Notes, and the Federation for Industrial
- Retention and Renewal.
-
- NAWWN will continue the mailings (like this one!) but do a lot
- more. We are now searching for a part-time coordinator. The
- coordinator and the steering committee selected at the Chicago
- meeting will guide the network through two initial campaigns that
- we are very excited about.
-
- NAWWN will help organize a delegation led by the displaced Green
- Giant workers of Teamster Local 912 in Watsonville, California, to
- Irapuato, Mexico, and follow-up local events across the country.
- The second campaign is support for the UE-FAT Strategic Organizing
- Alliance, a unique plan for cross-border organizing in the U.S.
- and Mexico that makes international solidarity real. Among other
- things, NAWWN will take on the "adopt-an-organizer" campaign to
- support FAT's maquiladora organizing drive. Of course, NAWWN will
- also be working on tours and exchanges of workers from Mexico and
- Canada as well as other direct solidarity work.
-
- NAWWN recently sent out a mailing describing the Chicago meeting
- with the proposed campaigns. If you would like more information,
- or for some reason, did not get the mailing, please call or
- write:
-
- NAWWN c/o 7435 Michigan Ave. Detroit, MI 48210 Tel: 313-842-6262
- Fax: 313-842-0227 This is only a temporary address until we hira a
- coordinator and get office space
-
- NOTE!
- Please, if you have not already done so, send $10 (payable to
- Labor Notes) to help cover the costs of these quarterly mailings
- to the above address. Thanks! Include your phone and
- union/organization along with your address!
