- Union Endorses Lynn Yeakel in Pennsylvania Senate Race
-
- LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The executive board of the 100,000-member Oil,
- Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, in session here
- yesterday, endorsed Democratic candidate Lynn Yeakel in her campaign
- to become U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. The endorsement was
- announced by OCAW Executive Board member Liz Bettinger. Bettinger,
- 37, a chemical industry worker and president of OCAW Local 8-719 at
- Minersville, Pa., represents nearly 25,000 members from 11 eastern
- states (including approximately 10,000 in Pennsylvania) on the OCAW
- board.
-
- "On issues important to working people, Lynn Yeakel supports them
- up and down the line, no exceptions," Bettinger said. "National
- health care for all Americans; job creation instead of job
- destruction; real help for the unemployed and homeless; strengthening
- education; economic conversion from defense spending to meaningful
- social investment, including a new G.I. Bill of Rights for working
- people; restoring and enforcing civil rights standards; a trade policy
- that protects worker rights and the global environment; a striker
- replacement bill that ends the practice of firing striking workers -
- you name it, she's for it, if it's in the interest of ordinary people
- who have to work for a living."
-
- "We know where Lynn Yeakel stands," Bettinger added. "She takes
- a position and stands rock-solid behind it. But Arlen Specter runs
- away from the issues, because dealing with them would expose his
- abysmal record, and he doesn't want to call attention to that. If you
- aren't part of the solution, then you're part of the problem, and
- Specter is definitely in the latter category. It's time for a
- change."
-
- "Yeakel is helping to lead a revolution in Pennsylvania politics,
- and we're going to be with her every step of the way," said Bettinger.
- "The members of our union will do whatever it takes for her to beat
- Arlen Specter. We'll donate funds, rally union people, work the
- precincts, answer phones, knock on doors, get people to the polls,
- anything that will help ensure victory."
