- NAFTA LOSING SUPPORT AMONG CANADIANS
-
- Fearing Canada will be unable to compete with Mexico's lower wages,
- environmental and safety standards, fewer Canadians are supporting the
- North American Free Trade Agreement. A recent Gallup poll showed that
- only 28 percent of Canadians are in favor of NAFTA, down from 35 percent
- last year. An Angus Reid Group poll recently found 29 percent of
- Canadians in support of the deal. The poll concludes that "support for
- NAFTA has crashed since September 1991." Canadians already are
- unhappy with the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which many blame
- for the 11.6 unemployment rate, an eight-year high. Critics of the accord
- say NAFTA will increase unemployment in Canada.
-
- A Canadian official said recently that Prime Minister Brian Mulroney still
- solidly supports NAFTA, despite the opinion polls and an appeal from
- Ontario Premier Bob Rae to suspend the negotiations.
