- AUSTRALIA
- Hundreds of Chinese students have staged a protest over the
- alleged ill-treatment of a fellow student, being held by Australian
- authorities at the detention center in Sydney. They claim the
- student was beaten while in detention waiting deportation.
-
- He applied for refugee status in Australia, but was denied and
- arrested in May. Earlier this month he was told he's be deported
- but refused to go.
-
- Chinese students claim authorities beat him on the head with a
- torch until he was unconscious. They say the Commonwealth and
- Immigration Minister must take responsibility in an appropriate
- manner and guarantee nothing like it happens again. (R. Australia

- SOLOMON ISLANDS
- Reports from Solomon Islands say two Australians have been
- arrested after allegedly attempting to export more than 200
- protected parrots. A light aircraft, reportedly to be used to fly
- the birds out of the country, is also said to have been impounded.
-
- Solomon Islands radio says authorities confiscated the birds, which
- were packed in more than 20 cartons, because the consignment lacked
- the correct documentation. Of the five species of parrots involved,
- the radio said, three have been classified as endangered species
- while the other two are prohibited exports under Solomon Islands'
- law.
-
- The government's chief conservation officer is quoted as saying the
- birds would have fetched about $180,000 in overseas markets. Police
- say the two Australians have been remanded in custody while further
- investigations continue. (R. Australia 8/24)
