  15. One (small) way to fight the Oregon referendum from afar:
  16.  
  17. The Student Assembly of Dartmouth College has passed by 22-8-1 a
  18. statement reprinted below condemning the upcoming referedum in Oregon
  19. to incorporate anti-gay and -lesbian provisions into the state
  20. constitution.  Right now, it is legal in all 50 states to evict gay and
  21. lesbian tenants, fire gay and lesbian employees, and execute other acts
  22. of discrimination.  A few cities around the country have enacted civil
  23. rights ordinances for gay and lesbian citizens.  The Oregon measure
  24. would prohibit any city in Oregon from protecting them, would require
  25. public schools to teach that homosexuality is Rabnormal, wrong,
  26. unnatural, and perverseS and Rto be discouraged and avoidedS (quoted
  27. from proposed amendment), and may force the state to fire all lesbian
  28. and gay state employees, including teachers.

  30. The Dartmouth Student Assembly will be sending a press release and the
  31. statement to national and Oregonian media.  We would like to see
  32. colleges and other entities around the country likewise generate
  33. publicity and draw attention to the situation in Oregon.  We would like
  34. to see the issue covered as broadly as the Louisiana gubernatorial
  35. election in which David Duke ran.

  37. Students, please urge your student governments to take up this issue so
  38. that we can keep media attention on this egregious situation. 
  39. Hopefully, other student governments will be able to pass stronger
  40. language.

  61. Rights violation,

  63. We, the Student Assembly of Dartmouth College, hereby condemn the
  64. Oregon Citizens AllianceUs anti-gay and -lesbian referendum on OregonUs
  65. November ballot.  Furthermore, we encourage other student government
  66. organizations around the country to join us in expressing outrage at
  67. this flagrant assault on the civil and human rights of gays, lesbians,
  68. and bisexuals by a state government.
