- TAXPAYERS PAY FOR TOXIC MILITARY CLEAN-UP
-
- Representatives Conyers (D-MI) and Boxer (D-CA) revealed on July 10th
- that taxpayers have reimbursed military contractors for $59 million in
- environmental clean-up costs. This will soon exceed $1 billion, according
- to a General Accounting Office (GAO) report. Incidentally, the Pentagon
- generates more than five times the toxic waste produced by all five major
- U.S. chemical corporations combined.
-
- Conyers points out that "the Department of Defense is not a welfare
- agency. If these contractors can make billions in profits while polluting,
- they should also pay for the clean-up."
-
- Copies of the report "D.o.D. Environmental Cleanup," (GAO/NSIAD-92-
- 253FS) are available. Call the GAO distribution center at 202-275-6241.
