- Following is the text of an Urgent Action appeal. Geneva, 24
- August 1992
- EL SALVADOR - POLICE VIOLENCE AGAINST STRIKING WORKERS
- The IFBWW calls for international solidarity to protest against
- police violence against SOISCES construction workers in San
- Salvador on 19 August and the arbitrary detention of 8 trade
- unionists. ARCO SA workers have been on strike since 6 July 1992
- (see Fax News 16-07-92 and Urgent Action 30-07-92). On 30 July,
- the strike was declared illegal and on 13 July, workers were
- violently evicted from the construction site at the Tinetti market
- in central San Salvador. A negotiation commission was then formed
- with the participation of the UN Peace-keeping Force (ONUSAL). An
- agreement was reached whereby ARCO agreed to reinstate the workers
- and continue negotiation over their demands. The following day,
- on 19 August, workers returned to the site expecting to be
- reinstated and the company refused. A peaceful march was staged to
- the ARCO offices. The march was forcibly broken up by the National
- Police, and 8 workers, including members of the Negotiating
- Commission were arbitrarily detained: Mauricio Antonio Villalta,
- Edgardo Ulises Guillen Villalta, Ruben David Gomez, Cesar Augusto
- Ramos Cortes, Eligio Pineda Rivas, Mauricio Jaime Sala Giron,
- Francisco Beltran Arevalo y Hugo Armando Velazquez. The IFBWW
- requests that you send messages of protest to the company and
- Salvadorean authorities protesting against the police actions,
- requesting an investigation of the events and the immediate
- liberty of the detained unionists. Protest Fax Numbers:
