- ETAN/US was launched in January 1992 as a U.S.-based
- grassroots network of people and organizations working on
- East Timor. Organizers hope to complement work already being
- done in other communities (in Washington, D.C., and in
- Catholic, academic, and media circles) "with an additional
- movement of activists who can educate and organize other
- constituencies." Several target constituencies have been
- identified: peace and justice groups, international
- organizations, the Portuguese-American community,
- Indonesians living in the United States, Catholic and other
- Christian communities, environmental and labor groups, and
- human rights activists.
- ETAN/US sponsors educational forums and meetings, organizes
- pickets and demonstrations, produces radio programs,
- publishes articles and editorials, distributes books,
- pamphlets, videos, and educational packets, and pressures
- both the U.S. and Indonesian governments to allow East Timor
- to determine its own political status.

- ***VETERANS EDUCATION PROJECT, P.O. Box 416, Amherst, MA
- 01004-0416. Tel: (413) 549-5037.
- Founded in 1982 VEP is the only veterans organization in the
- United States that exists solely to reach out to young
- people. Promoting itself as "living curricula" for the
- classroom the independent non-profit organization offers
- students an opportunity to hear veterans of the U.S. armed
- services speak about the realities of war and military
- service. Many of the men and women of VEP are Vietnam-era
- veterans.
- Though each VEP speaker's perspective is unique and personal
- the organization's overall aim is "to help students evaluate
- recruiter information, as it exposes the myths about war
- created by Rambo-style movies." Organizers explain that a
- VEP presentation will:
- -- Engage youth and push them to think more critically.
- -- Offer particularly important insights into the
- Vietnam conflict and its aftermath, topics that are often
- relegated to a few paragraphs in most history texts.
- -- Raise important issues such as patriotic duty, moral
- choices, and the long-term implications of military service.
- -- Go beyond the information military recruiters offer
- to deal with the nature of military service and combat, as
- well as the physical and psychological consequences of war.
- -- Enable students to make an informed choice about
- enlisting and pursuing a career in the military.
- VEP speakers note that their presentations "invariably lead
- to lively dialogues about important contemporary issues,
- such as the Persian Gulf conflict, the U.S. invasion of
- Panama, and the current role of the U.S. military."
- VEP resources include a quarterly 6-page newsletter,
- <Vietnam Education Project,> a 77-page spiral-bound training
- manual entitled <Facts About Military Life: A Guide for
- Speaking in the Schools >($11, plus $2.50 postage), and a
- highly regarded 30-minute video, <Straight Talk: Vietnam-Era
- Veterans Speak Out >($20, plus $2.50 postage). Video and
- guide package: $32.50, postage included.
