- We are considering buying an HP or IBM Unix box (yes,
- I'm been told they are not nice but I'm also told
- they are fast). We would like to save $$$ by using
- gcc. How would we install it without a compiler?
- Find a kind soul who would allow us to ftp their
- binaries?
-
- Thanks,
-

- I'm all for saving money, but the question is: to what purpose? Are
- you saving money so you can buy proprietary software? Or are you
- saving money because you don't have any? If you don't have any money,
- then I presume the HP's and IBM's are gifts--a typical state of
- affairs for Universities. In that case, these companies should grant
- you licenses as well.
-
- If you are saving money so you can afford to pay students and staff to
- develop and enhance free software, I'll send you a copy of our
- software development tools that runs on IBM RS/6000 (we don't have
- binaries for HP yet). Please be sure to tell me what projects you
- will be working on, so I can see how we can benefit by benefitting
- you.
-
- The support and development of free software costs money. Cygnus
- Support is currently spending millions of dollars per year on
- supporting and enhancing GNU C, G++, GDB, and other GNU software.
- While we benefit tremendously from the cooperation of users around the
- world, we are screwed when users choose to spend money on competitors'
- products simply because they can get copies of our software without
- paying money. The Free Software Foundation is in a similar position.
- Please consider this fact when you make your purchasing decisions.
-
- You get what you pay for: if you want freely redistributable software
- to get better, you are better off paying for it.
