- I am trying to convince my boss to switch to gcc. He says that he will only
- do so if :
- 1. gcc has been used in a real product.
-
- Data General and NeXT use gcc as their native compilers that ship with
- each one of their systems. their whole systems are compiled using
- gcc. is that a real enough product for your boss? the next berkeley
- release, 4.4BSD, uses gcc as its compiler.
-
- 2. It has been used with networking software, tcpip, Sun rpc, etc.
-
- see above.
-
- 3. It works on (yuck)PC's, esp. OS/2 and Windows.
-
- you can find versions for DOS and OS/2. don't know about windows.
-
- He wants hard evidence of its viability largely because it is
- unsupported.
-
- your boss makes a rather unsupportable claim here, most likely due to
- his own ignorance. if he wants support, he can buy it from a handful
- of companies and consultants that offer it. similarly, if he buys a
- compiler from Sun, it doesn't mean he'll get support -- he still has
- to pay for that. the thing with gcc is that you can get the compiler
- for free.
