- This is a very keyboard-centric view of things. You could very easily
- say that "the problem with the keyboard is that it disrupts the use of
- the mouse".
-
- The *real* problem is that the keyboard is a two-handed device.
- Engelbart's original intent was that the mouse be used in conjunction
- with a one-handed keyboard. Unforturnately, most systems do not come
- with one-handed keyboards. Fortunately, you don't need to buy one to
- achieve the same thing. There is a software solution to this problem...
-
- It is a utility called Half-QWERTY. Basically, what it does is turn
- your regular QWERTY keyboard into a one-handed keyboard. Here's how
- it works...
-
- When you hold down the spacebar it remaps the keyboard in a mirror
- image. For example, if you want to type the letter K (MIDDLE finger,
- RIGHT hand) with your left hand, simply hold down the spacebar and
- hit the D key (MIDDLE finger, LEFT hand). Notice that in both cases
- you use the middle finger in the same row. People are able to
- adapt to this *very* quickly. One person (a Macworld journalist)
- claimed to be able to type 20 wpm after 15 minutes of practice.
-
- You can ftp to explorer.dgp.toronto.edu to get software demos of this
- concept. Mac and DOS versions are in the /pub/1handkbd directory.
-
- DISCLAIMER: I'm the inventor of this keyboard design and have a
- vested interest in its success. We now return you to your regularly
- scheduled bickering...
