- #I have the feeling that this should be an easy question but I can't find the
- #answer on my own so here goes.....
- #
- #My boss asked me if there is a way to put a "granite" pattern on his root
- #window after login. I thought I remembered seeing something about it at
- #some point in the past so I said I would look into it.
- #
- #After going through Scheifler & Gettys, O'Reilley (Vols 1,2,4 & 5), the FAQs
- #for comp.windows.x and comp.windows.x.motif and the vendor documentation we
- #have on hand I still cannot find out how it is done. It is not one of the
- #options presented in the Motif window manager's 'Screen' options.
- #
- #BTW we have VMS 5.4 running X11R4.
- #
- #OK. What do I do? Where else do I look? Or have I just overlooked something?
- #Any help will be greatly appreciated.

- What you will need to do is to get ahold of either the X11R3 or X11R4 clients
- and demos available from the DECUS Library. This code will contain among
- other things a routine to correctly find the root window on a DECwindows/VMS
- display which you can then use to change the background. In the X11R3 stuff
- there was a program called XGRANITE that does what you boss wants. Otherwise,
- you're going to have to come up with you own granite bitmap.
