- Regarding Motif in the market, and the future of GUI's,
- I've got a bit of information.
-
- Actually, I've been in the same boat recently for a
- company I've been working for.
-
- Here's the basic info I've got :
-
- - Motif is rapidly capturing the Xt/C language based GUI
- market, if they haven't got most of it wrapped up already.
-
- - OpenLook has a significant market share for the same
- market, mostly due to Sun's continued strength in the
- workstation market.
-
- - C++ based toolkits (OI) are generating interest, though
- it seems that they haven't captured market share yet.
-
- - Watch out for MOOLIT! It let's one compile the same(?)
- code for Motif or OpenLook.
-
- Where might the evidence come from? Well, I have a few
- sources. I suggest you look into these for yourself to
- help confirm my information. I would be happy to hear
- differing opinions, except from those folks at Sun -
- who likely must defend OpenLook until the end.
-
- - I called OSF, and they were happy to send me the
- Dataquest charts on GUI marketshare, showing Motif's
- strength in the market.
-
- - I attended XWorld and Xhibition, and found that speakers
- ,users and vendors were targeting Motif much more often
- than OpenLook.
-
- Hope this is interesting/helpful.
