- OK. My view is that I do not consider SCO Magazine an authority.
- It's information is trite, and I've found instances where it is wrong.
- Dangerously wrong. The worst instance I've seen was the suggestion
- in issue #1 that you edit /etc/gettydefs. First, the logic behind
- that suggestion was wrong. This was a change to fix a nonexistent
- problem. Second, if you took their advice you would never be able to
- log into your system again.
-
- Part of the problem is that their technical expert really isn't, he's
- a guy with no technical background beyond about two years supporting
- UNIX and XENIX systems. I'm not saying that he doesn't have anything
- to contribute. I am saying, however, if that's the technical depth
- of their editorial review board, then there is no way this magazine
- could ever become anything remotely considered authoritative.
-
- It is further my view that SCO XENIX does not have an sdevice.d
- directory, so this discussion can't in any way be pertinent to the
- charter of this newsgroup.
-
- (However, if this were an appropriate place to discuss SCO UNIX, such
- as comp.unix.sysv386, then I'd say that if there are seperate `ad'
- and `eiad' entries, then the proper way to change the configuration
- is to edit the Y/N in field two, and not to change the field one name
- as SCO Magazine suggests. If there aren't two entries, then SCO
- botched the /etc/conf distribution. Sorry I can't say for sure. I
- haven't bought 2.3v4.0 for the lab yet and SCO doesn't use us as a
- beta site anymore. Guess we don't sell enough of their software.)
