-
- Having reviewed several of these Sparc clones for a magazine (although
- not the Hyundai, not yet anyhow) by and large they're identical to
- analogous Sun systems (e.g. Sun workstations with the same Sparc chip
- and clock rate.) It really depends on what you are interested in.
-
- The most common incompatabilities are in the color graphics board
- implementations, although some just use Sun GX boards or whatever
- others adapt other chip sets. This won't affect most users, but for
- example you might find that the MIT X11 server won't just compile out
- of the box (tho the companies have already ported openwindows
- themselves.)
-
- Of course, if you plan to implement your own OS onto one you may find
- other incompatabilities (e.g. MMU implementation.) Or you may not be
- able to install the next release of SunOS or even certain patches
- distributed by Sun. Ask the vendor.
-
- But the basic rule of thumb is, other than the various graphics
- options, these companies can't afford (well, aren't interested in) the
- software work it would take to deliver all of SunOS onto a glaringly
- incompatible hardware platform. If you installed your own Sun copy of
- 4.1.1 then all the more promising (obviously in some cases that will
- not work.)
-
- Caveat emptor, but the clones are often a great buy and if you are
- primarily interested in running or even developing applications they
- do the job, most will run binaries from Sun systems without any
- recompile (and of course that's by design.)
