  15. Having reviewed several of these Sparc clones for a magazine (although
  16. not the Hyundai, not yet anyhow) by and large they're identical to
  17. analogous Sun systems (e.g. Sun workstations with the same Sparc chip
  18. and clock rate.) It really depends on what you are interested in.

  20. The most common incompatabilities are in the color graphics board
  21. implementations, although some just use Sun GX boards or whatever
  22. others adapt other chip sets. This won't affect most users, but for
  23. example you might find that the MIT X11 server won't just compile out
  24. of the box (tho the companies have already ported openwindows
  25. themselves.)

  27. Of course, if you plan to implement your own OS onto one you may find
  28. other incompatabilities (e.g. MMU implementation.) Or you may not be
  29. able to install the next release of SunOS or even certain patches
  30. distributed by Sun. Ask the vendor.

  32. But the basic rule of thumb is, other than the various graphics
  33. options, these companies can't afford (well, aren't interested in) the
  34. software work it would take to deliver all of SunOS onto a glaringly
  35. incompatible hardware platform. If you installed your own Sun copy of
  36. 4.1.1 then all the more promising (obviously in some cases that will
  37. not work.)

  39. Caveat emptor, but the clones are often a great buy and if you are
  40. primarily interested in running or even developing applications they
  41. do the job, most will run binaries from Sun systems without any
  42. recompile (and of course that's by design.)
