- DEC 5000/200, Ultrix 4.2 is NIS master to several NIS clients which are also
- DEC 5000/200 with Ultrix 4.2.
-
- We distribute the passwd database via NIS (yes, NIS, sigh). It seems like
- the NIS database got corrupted today. We have 2500 entries in /etc/passwd
- but ypcat passwd on the NIS client just showed 4 entries. I touched
- /etc/passwd on the NIS master and did a ypmake and this cleared the problem.
-
- How did this happen? More pointedly, if two people do a yppasswd from a
- client, does the NIS master bother to check to see if the NIS databases are
- being written to before doing doing ypmake? Could the two yppasswd requests
- have been trying to write to the NIS files simultaneously?
-
- I looked at /var/yp/Makefile and didn't find any sort of shell-level locking
- at all.
-
- Any clues?
