- >Can restore read a tape made by rdump?
-
- You are correct in assuming that the data storage is the same,
- only the device read/write routines are different. *dump should be able
- to write tapes readable by *restore, as long as nobody has "added value"
- unduly between versions. That is to say, I can't state categorically
- that a dump tape from a CRAY will be readable on a DECstation, or a
- DECstation on a Sun. Dump has a lot of "knowledge" about file systems,
- and makes little effort to save it in a portable or machine-independent
- format.
-
- >Further, are these interchangable with the new dump/restore that mjr did? and
- >does that support network dumps (rdump)?
-
- They are interchangeable to the best of my knowledge. Since dump
- and restore don't have any kind of conformance test rack, this is based
- on actually trying it a few times. ;) That can't prove correctness, but it
- may improve comfort. Give it a shot! As always, any code you get from me
- that you didn't pay for is unsupported, as is, do not take internally,
- in case of accidental ingestion, consult a doctor immediately, etc, etc.
