  10. I would like some advice on video graphics cards for running X.

  12. I have a 386/25 machine with 8MB RAM (not expandable any further.)
  13. When I run X on this machine the performance, as you might guess,
  14. is pretty awful. I'm currently using an OAK VGA card with a VGA
  15. monitor (640x480). I am aware that I need a lot more RAM and a
  16. more powerful processor to get decent X performance. However, I
  17. would like to find out if I can get noticeably better performance
  18. by simply upgrading my video card. I've come across references to
  19. local bus systems such as Fahrenheit 1280 from Orchid as a means
  20. of improving performance; do these work reliably with X? I'll be
  21. running the X server that I got with ESIX 4.0.4.

  23. I'll be grateful for any advice, thoughts, etc. on:

  25. 1. How I can enhance performance when running X without having to
  26.    buy a new motherboard.

  28. 2. Whether upgrading the motherboard is the only sensible solution.

  30. 3. If I decide to buy a new system, I would like to purchase it
  31.    from a local dealer (in the SF bay area.) I'll appreciate
  32.    hearing from anyone who knows of dealers that sell reasonably
  33.    priced 486 systems that run UNIX reliably.
