- Subject: Problems with stray xterm client processes...
-
- I was wondering if anyone else out there has experienced something similar...
-
- We seem to be occasionally experiencing a problem with "xterm" clients
- sharing the same pseudo-devices.
-
- This problem arises when a user logs out of one of our Sun SPARCstations
- where they had "xterm" clients running when they logged out.
-
- What happens then is the "xterm" clients of another user (on the same
- machine) seems to then start sharing the same pseudo device that the
- other user had. The second user can do a "whoami" and they will get a
- response of the other user. It seems that every other command is
- executed under the other users "uid".
-
- Following is an outline of a typical scenario:
-
- 1). User "smith" logs into (xdm) "cgist" and starts up xterm clients on an
- NCD X-terminal (or a Sun console running the X11 server).
-
- 2). User "jones" logs into "cgist" and starts up xterm clients on an xterm.
-
- 3). User "smith" finishes working and logs out of "cgist".
-
- 4). One of user "jones" xterm clients now begins acting funny. User "jones"
- can execute "whoami" and get "jones" and then do it again and get "smith".
-
- 5). User "jones" must log out in order to clear this problem.
-
- Any information and/or assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
