- Hi BSDers,
-
- Well, first of all, I got the bindist of 0.1 about a month ago and finally
- I decided "what the hell, go for it" :) and installed it on my Packard Bell
- 386sx machine. (I have 130 meg IDE + 4 megs ram, no math chip.)
-
- I am quite well experienced with things DOS (I've been running it for
- a long time) but not with things UNIX. I've used it in various flavors only
- for a short time. I'm somewhat familiar with the 'standard' utilities but
- not as much with sysadm stuff as I should be.
-
- So, I have a couple of questions. These might be FAQs but I haven't yet
- been able to get the FAQ yet.
-
- 1) After it extracted all the bindist cpio files, it asked me to name the
- computer. I typed in "Belvedere" :) but it also seemed to suggest putting
- in a numeric domain (e.g. 121.43.22.11 or whatever). I've seen these domains
- before (I realize they have to do with FTP), but I haven't the *foggiest* idea
- how to come up with a numeric domain for this installation. I would assume
- I can't just type in a random one - it might be already used by an FTP site or
- other unix system.
-
- 2) I read the INSTALL.NOTES file on how to set up for ftping the other
- distributions (src, etc) as well as any other files I might need. There seemed
- to be some unclear stuff in there with respect to how I go about doing this.
-
- I tried tip. The first time, I got what some others have gotten - a connected
- message and then can't suspend (have to reboot) after doing 'tip com2' or
- 'tip /dev/com2'. Now, all I get is an 'unknown hostname' message.
-
- I am well cognizant about bbsing, mail (such as it is) and getting files from
- BBSes and even ftpmail from a unix host I've been calling over the past month
- to read this and other newsgroups. However, I can't seem to find how to
- set things up in bsd to be able to do much of this yet.
-
- 3) Sometime down the road I am going to want to get uucp up and running so
- that I can get and read news (and use mail) from 386bsd, and not have to
- go through a 'bbs' (i.e., call to read news online).
-
- It looks like a lot of this stuff is related somehow. I need some hand-holding
- I suppose, and some specifics. For example, if files are available on agate.
- berkeley.edu, what do I need to do to set my machine up to connect to them
- via ftp? If I have a numeric domain address, can I just do 'ftp 121.21.320.2' for example, and get there?
