- I whole-heartedly sympathize with your situation. Months ago,
- (actually, more than a year ago), I was trying to get a Truevision
- NuVista+ to do the same thing. Just a few months ago, I discovered
- a solution which may help you (and all other 3rd-party board owners
- out there).
-
- A/UX 2.0.1 (can't speak for 3.0) attempts to close all slots
- it doesn't have valid board ID's for when it launches. This
- can be important for several reasons others have explained to
- me in detail, but I won't go into here. Your board is not
- recognized and so A/UX attempts to close it (and hangs).
-
- The solution (although probably not sanctioned by Apple) is to
- ResEdit a copy of the startup application. I can't find my
- writeup I sent to Truevision, but the gist of what you want
- to try is:
-
- * Inside ResEdit, check out the Menus resources
- and enable the "Debug" menus.
-
- * Start up A/UX in the normal fashion, but cancel
- the normal loading when the opportunity is
- presented.
-
- * Using the menu bar option (Debug), select the
- set startup flags (?) option (only from memory
- here).
-
- * Select the "Don't Close Slots" check box and
- try booting from the menu bar.
-
- If all goes well, A/UX will get past the point where you
- hang and you'll get a dual headed desktop. (I've successfully
- been using this on the NuVista+ for several months now.)
- There's no guarantee of what other irregularities this
- may cause, but my 2.0.1 hasn't misbehaved recently.
-
- There are other modifications you can perform to have this
- happen as the default case (like installing your Board's ID
- in the table of valid slots to leave open), but I haven't
- got time to type that in without sitting at my Mac.
-
- Good luck, and I hope this helps!
