  20.     I whole-heartedly sympathize with your situation.  Months ago,
  21.     (actually, more than a year ago), I was trying to get a Truevision
  22.     NuVista+ to do the same thing.  Just a few months ago, I discovered
  23.     a solution which may help you (and all other 3rd-party board owners
  24.     out there).

  26.     A/UX 2.0.1 (can't speak for 3.0) attempts to close all slots
  27.     it doesn't have valid board ID's for when it launches.  This
  28.     can be important for several reasons others have explained to
  29.     me in detail, but I won't go into here.  Your board is not
  30.     recognized and so A/UX attempts to close it (and hangs).

  32.     The solution (although probably not sanctioned by Apple) is to
  33.     ResEdit a copy of the startup application.  I can't find my
  34.     writeup I sent to Truevision, but the gist of what you want
  35.     to try is:

  37.         * Inside ResEdit, check out the Menus resources
  38.           and enable the "Debug" menus.
  39.  
  40.         * Start up A/UX in the normal fashion, but cancel
  41.           the normal loading when the opportunity is 
  42.           presented.
  43.  
  44.         * Using the menu bar option (Debug), select the
  45.           set startup flags (?) option (only from memory
  46.           here).
  47.  
  48.         * Select the "Don't Close Slots" check box and
  49.           try booting from the menu bar.
  50.  
  51.     If all goes well, A/UX will get past the point where you
  52.     hang and you'll get a dual headed desktop.  (I've successfully
  53.     been using this on the NuVista+ for several months now.)
  54.     There's no guarantee of what other irregularities this 
  55.     may cause, but my 2.0.1 hasn't misbehaved recently.

  57.     There are other modifications you can perform to have this
  58.     happen as the default case (like installing your Board's ID
  59.     in the table of valid slots to leave open), but I haven't
  60.     got time to type that in without sitting at my Mac.
