- I am looking for software to read and write half-inch, nine-track,
- IBM and ANSI labeled tapes without having to be knowledgable of the
- intricacies of the dd command or, more importantly, even the character-
- istics of the tape to be read. We receive many tapes written elsewhere,
- and have many users who are "non-computer-friendly" who need to read
- these tapes on their own.
-
- The software should be able to assist the user in inspecting the
- tape, read and interpret tape labels (if they exist), extract arbitrary
- blocks from the tape, support fixed and variable length blocks, translate
- from EBCDIC to ASCII, add newline characters and strip trailing blanks
- if necessary, and create labeled tapes. We have a tape drive which
- emulates an IBM 9348 nine-track drive, attached as a SCSI device to an
- IBM RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.
-
- If anyone knows of such a program (either free from an ftp sight or
- distributed by a vendor), and could offer any comments on such programs,
- please send me mail. I will summarize if there is enough interest.
-
- Thanks!
