- It could also be an addressing problem. You need to be sure the tape has
- the same address set on it as you told SMIT when you defined the drive.
- Look on the back of the drive. On an IBM tape drive there's a small white
- knob in a blue wheel with digits 0-9. It that's set to 5, you have to
- define the "connection address" (SMIT, "Add a tape drive") as 50. This is
- the usual address for a tape on an RS6000, but if there's already
- something defined there, you will have to move it, or reset your wheel;
- in any event, be sure what you tell smit matches what's on the drive.

- Then, too, there's the old question: is it plugged in? Is it turned on?
- Is the SCSI cable connected? At both ends? I get the same message you get
- by trying to configure a powered-down tape drive which has been on my system
- for months and which I know works.
