  25. It could also be an addressing problem. You need to be sure the tape has
  26. the same address set on it as you told SMIT when you defined the drive.
  27. Look on the back of the drive. On an IBM tape drive there's a small white
  28. knob in a blue wheel with digits 0-9. It that's set to 5, you have to
  29. define the "connection address" (SMIT, "Add a tape drive") as 50. This is
  30. the usual address for a tape on an RS6000, but if there's already
  31. something defined there, you will have to move it, or reset your wheel;
  32. in any event, be sure what you tell smit matches what's on the drive.

  34. Then, too, there's the old question: is it plugged in? Is it turned on?
  35. Is the SCSI cable connected? At both ends? I get the same message you get
  36. by trying to configure a powered-down tape drive which has been on my system
  37. for months and which I know works.
