  17. Sorry if this is a repost - I didn't see it come through from last week.

  19. I am trying to determine if what we have experienced is an isolated incident
  20. or if we should be worried.
  21.  
  22. We have purchased a total of 15 Quantum Prodrive 210s drives from Sun in Sun's
  23. "Desktop Storage Packs".  So far, within 2 years, 3 of them have died.  The
  24. platters spin up, but the heads "seek" back and forth across the drive,
  25. clunking as they hit their internal stops (not the case I've torn one down
  26. and checked).

  28. We called Sun and told them that we are up to a 20 percent failure rate and
  29. asked if they had any record of a bad lot of these drives.  After much run-
  30. around, I was told no, no record of high failure rates, no engineering
  31. change orders issued.  I was told that if we were to put our ELC's under
  32. hardware maintainence, maybe they could fix the ones that have died.  No one
  33. I talked to at our local Sun office thought a 20 percent failure rate was of
  34. undue concern.

  36. Right after I talked to Sun, a friend and administrator told me that he had
  37. just lost a Quantum Prodrive 210s with the same symptoms.  I don't know the
  38. age of his drive.

  40. Having no luck with Sun, I tried to dig up a number for Quantum.  I got a
  41. long-distance number which I called.  It got me a touch-tone switching
  42. system with a couple of choices, none of which were technical support.  It
  43. referenced a 900 number if the choices offered weren't applicable to the
  44. question.

  46. My questions for the net:

  48.   Has anyone else had any problems with the Quantum Prodrive 210s?

  50.   For anyone who had problems with the drives, how did you resolve it (other
  51.     than hardware maintainence)?
  52.  
  53.   Does anyone else find it annoying and insulting that Quantum makes it very
  54.     difficult to get information other than formatting and ordering directly
  55.     from them?
