- I have a Trinitron Sun "rosebud" monitor on my IPC 4/40. I've
- noticed that it has the slight shakes on occasion. I did
- eventually track the problem down to wiring in the building.
- Apparently the wiring, some of which is old knob-and-tube type,
- makes a big AC field due to the physical separation of the
- conductors.
-
- I even tried running my monitor and computer from a UPS system
- unplugged from any wall based power; still got the shakes. The
- only solution was to move the computer to a different location or
- turn off everything in the adjoining room. My mahcine is on a
- wooden desk. Using a steel topped desk seems to help avoid the
- shakes.
-
- There is the same configuration system in a new building, no
- problems. I took my system to the new building and could not get
- the system to exhibit the shakes. It is definitely something funny
- about the wiring near my mahcine. Unfortunately no post hoc power
- conditioning seems useful. Some sort of soft steel "mu metal" like
- material near the monitor to help absorb ambient H field would
- probably be the most helpful approach.
-
- There were some bad CG3 frame buffer cards back in 1991; this
- would not be the problem afflicting the SS2. My CG3 was
- manufactured in June of '92, so it should be OK.
