- |I see no reason to doubt your Sun contacts when they say "the system is
- |performing as we said it would".
- |
- |In the real world, I guess it *is* pretty unrealistic to expect your Sun
- |salesman to advise you to (1) buy a Solbourne or (2) hang to your
- |Sequent for another year or two, but I suspect you'd be *much* happier
- |if you had done one or the other of those...
-
- ahem, i suppose this is where i chime in. (never having used a big time
- sequent i can't comment on one.)
-
- we have a 4 cpu 690 w/ 128MB (not enough but...) and a 4 cpu solbourne
- (4/400 class cpu's) w/ 256MB.
-
- these machines do general purpose timesharing. who typically reports*
- 40-60 users at this point in the semester peaking at 80-100 (per
- machine). according to things like mon both machines spend about 80%
- of the time in system after we pass 50-70 users.
-
- sun says ``fixed in sunos5.1'' solbourne says ``hmmmm, we thought we fixed
- that''.
-
- i just wouldn't want anyone to order up a solbourne thinking it would
- necessarily solve this problem. i do not think this is not a solved
- problem on sparc hardware with an os derived from sunos4. the
- solbourne is better but not better enough.
-
- i use the 690 on a regular basis and sometimes it's not as brisk as i
- might like but it's not normally what i would consider unacceptably
- slow.
-
- * i say ``who reports'' because we have lots of stuff happening on lots
- of pty's that never makes it into utmp. i presume that as long as i
- use what who says consistently it's meaningful to me. it might be
- meaningless to you.
