- I have just successfully installed SunOS 4.1.1 on our Sun 3/160, and went
- ahead configuring a custom kernel for it. I changed the default name from
- "GENERIC" to "WATUSI" and made only one other change: I changed the csr of the
- third ethernet interface (ie2) to match the address I had set on the card
- (this additional card is the reason for the custom kernel).
-
- Because the OS installation option I chose did not install the /usr/kvm/sys/
- directories and files, I got the complete tree from another Sun3 and then did
- the config and make. Since the early tests of the new kernel were to be very
- temporary, I moved it to /tvmunix (rather than renaming the original) and
- tried to boot it.
-
- I got the following:
-
- b /tvmunix -s
- scsi: disk busy
- Boot: sd(0,0,0)/tvmunix -s
- root on sd0a fstype 4.2
- Size: 927560+197472+146920 bytes
-
- Exception 2C at 00004014

- I get the scsi: message even when I boot the regular kernel, so that is a
- different issue.
-
- What kinds of things could cause such a failure at such an early point? I
- cannot believe that the tiny changes in the config file could do it -- I mean,
- I have built kernels before. My only vague guess is that some of the .o files
- that I got from the other Sun3 may not be compatible, but I assumed that
- anything that needed to be rebuilt would be.
-
- How can I trace down the source of this failure?
-
- Thanks very much in advance.
