- One of the Indigo Elans (4.0.2) here has developed a peculiar problem.
- After a few months of flawless performance users have reported that twice
- in the last week they have sat down in front of the machine only to discover
- that the screen is blank and they can't get the usual login display.
-
- The machine is up and remote logins still work. A quick perusal of
- /usr/adm/SYSLOG reveals:
-
- Aug 31 17:16:22 chetayl0 Xsession: scox: logout
- Aug 31 17:16:23 chetayl0 gfxinit: GFX_DOWNLOAD failed
- Aug 31 17:16:23 chetayl0 xdm[157]: server unexpectedly died
- Aug 31 17:16:38 chetayl0 xdm[157]: Server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled
-
- OK, so now it's clear why the screen is blank. In both cases I have been
- able to use /usr/gfx/startgfx to successfully restart the graphics.
- There is no manual entry for 'gfxinit', so I'm at a loss as to what
- "GFX_DOWNLOAD FAILED" actually means, i.e. why is the download failing?
-
- Note that I do have 'DisplayManager._0.terminateServer' set to True in
- /usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-config, so the server should be restarted after each
- session.
-
- Anybody got a clue?
