- Get a good v.32bis/v.42/v.42bis modem. There are good and less good
- vendors and models. I like the Digicom 9624LE+ but not the Scout+.
- I think the Intel 14.4EX is broken. The Telebit T3000 is ok, but has
- high latency for SLIP. The ZyXEL is in between. You can pay $230
- for a less good modem and $350 for a very good modem; at least if
- you by in quantity or if you shop by mail. Well, you can also pay more.

- With a good modem, you get from 1600 to 3600 Bytes/sec, depending on
- how compressible is the data you send. That is about 800 times slower
- than ethernet, so the unwary are sometimes very unhappy. Those of us
- who remember 110 baud, 10 Byte/sec modems are happier.
