  11.     I am thinking of getting an R4K indigo for home. The main use
  12. would be fortran and C programming, and visulaisation work. I am hoping to
  13. get information on the following points:

  15. 1 )    Regarding the disk:
  16.     the 432 would suffice for disk space needs as I will also have a
  17.     dat drive for offline storage.
  18.     I am willing to pay extra for the 1 GB drive if it has superior
  19.     performance both in random access mode and in raw transfer
  20.     a ) does anyone have any performance numbers on an R4K indigo with
  21.         both options as the system disk and compare them?
  22.     b ) can these numbers be seen qualitatively?? ie - do compiles and
  23.         large disk accesses appear perceptibly faster ?? Can you
  24.         see the speedup in graphics if paging/swapping is occurring using
  25.         the 1.2 GByte disk over the 432 MByte disk ?

  27. 2 )    Regarding the monitor:
  28.     I can only afford entry graphics for starts. Hopefully in a year or
  29.     so I can find the money for ELAN. In the meantime ,
  30.     a ) there has been a controversy over the quality of the starter
  31.         graphics monitors and whether the 16" sony was better than
  32.         the 16" Mitsubishi. Can someone who has used both comment on 
  33.         how they differ and whether it is worth specifying one or the 
  34.         other on the order.
  35.     b ) I am told that in terms of features:
  36.  
  37.         the Mitsubishi can scan at 60Hz,72Hz and 120 Hz
  38.         (at 1/2 vertical resolution) whereas the Sony cannot
  39.  
  40.         are there any other feature differences?

  42.         In particular, I understand that both the Mitsubishi and the
  43.         Sony can go to 1280 x 1024 resolution. This is an absolute
  44.         requirement for the monitor.
  45.  
  46. 3)    What modem works well with slip?? I need the highest speed possible
  47.     that works over a phone line as I won't be able to afford a leased line.
  48.     What speed works reliably oveer the phone line?
  49.  
  50. 4)    Does the UPS sold through SGI express do the job in terms of power 
  51.     protection as well as battery backup? Any good/bad experiences with it
  52.     in lightning and brownout conditions ??
  53.  
  54.     In particular, is the Smart UPS400 good enough for the power
  55.     requirements of an R4K Indigo ?? Or is it marginal ??
