- Nope.
-
- Since the VideoLab product is *real* popular, and lot's of
- users ask this, I thought I would post Our Reasons For No Composite
- And S-Video on VideoLab
-
- 1. Way back in 1990, we thought that;
- A) The Soviet Union would be around awhile
- B) VideoLab would be a two-board set
-
- Sheesh, were we wrong.
-
- It turns out that (for a lot of reasons) the second board which
- was to have had the digital encoder/decoder, VLAN transmitter and
- some other goodies was going to be *much* later than the board
- that became the VideoLab we now know and love.
-
- 2. Not only was the second board going to trail the first by a number
- of months, but it would have to be priced at around $10K. Now, this
- is not all that bad of a deal considering users would get both 525
- and 625 D2 as well as NTSC, PAL and both versions of S-Video at
- dead-on broadcast quality, but we had to think "Gee, would our non-
- broadcast/pro users want to pay $10K if all they need is composite
- out and maybe VLAN?" With encoders going from < $1K for a VIDI/O
- Box to maybe $3-4K for some mid-range units, and a V-LAN T going
- for about $1K, we thought it would be better to let users spend
- their own $10K on a Faroudja encoder if the need great encoding and
- $1K on a VIDI/O box if they just need to make VHS tapes.
-
- 3. The break-out box was designed *before* this was decided, and therefore
- retains the jacks for "Future Expansion".
-
- Also,
-
- 4. Most animation/video pro users record in component anyway, and even
- the networks would usually work in component until the last possible
- step in the chain.
-
- And,
-
- 5. VideoLab and a low-cost encoder is still cheaper than the VideoCreator
- and most stand-alone scan converters, plus it has input, digital video,
- transcoding, etc., etc., etc.
-
-
- Any and all comments are invited, as always.
