- _The fragile HP 95LX?_
-
- A couple of weeks ago I posted a note on my experiences using a Psion
- Series 3 pocket computer which had been generously lent to us by Canon
- Office Supplies in Cairns, north Queensland. [We are looking for a
- suitable replacement for the Sharp PC1600 which we have been using at a
- number of places for field data recording over the past few years.]
-
- Today I noticed that a Cairns computer firm was advertising the HP 95LX
- along with other products, so I contacted them to see if they would lend
- us a unit for a few days of on-site testing. [As I said in my previous
- posting, we are concerned that the "loose lid syndrome" reported by many
- users would make the HP 95LX impractical for use in the field.]
-
- Unfortunately, the local HP agents were not prepared to lend a unit.
- Their reason? "These machines are too small and fragile to lend for
- testing."!!! That being the case, they are obviously not suitable for
- field use! (I wonder if they *really* meant to tell us that?)
-
- It is certainly interesting that the Psion agents *volunteered* the loan
- of their machine, but the HP agents do not have the same degree of faith
- in the quality of their product. Could this be the reason for the
- higher price of the Psion, that it is better built and more reliable?

-
- PS. I originally contacted Sharp, HP, and Psion re our need to replace
- the now discontinued PC1600. Sharp haven't bothered to reply. Perhaps
- because the new PC3000 and PC3100 are too bulky or heavy to meet our
- specifications for a replacement (e.g. weight less than 450 g, etc.)?
