- The Sun is on an ethernet with my NeXT, and we just got this nice 4mm
- tapedrive. At the moment I am doing backups to the optical disk on my
- cube, but who knows how long that situation can last...? So, it is
- desirable to back up to the tape, if possible.
-
- It looked pretty simple, we thought: use 'rdump ...', making sure that
- root on the NeXT has root login privileges on the Sun. It even seemed
- to work, when we tried it, at least as far as the console on the NeXT
- was concerned.
-
- Not so, at the Sun. The tape was badly written. We then found in the
- man page for rdump that the utility (in 2.1) apparently only works
- between NeXTs. Bummer.
-
- Is that problem with rdump fixed in 3.0?
-
- If not, is there a way to set up the crontab to write a tar file to
- the Sun's tapedrive? It seems it might be tricky (or impossible?) to
- NFS mount the tapedrive so it is visible to the NeXT. [An alternative
- might be to NFS mount the NeXT disk on the Sun and run the backup through
- the Sun's cron, but that seems kludgy and also shifts the chore of backing
- up _my_ machine to my colleague, who doesn't want that responsibility.]
-
- Clearly this is not the first time people have faced this problem. Any
- help here would be much appreciated.
