  12. Problem: you're sitting at a NeXT on a network, working  
  13. away.  Suddenly music starts playing and the system has a  
  14. panic.  This happens not once but many times.  Sometimes  
  15. locking up the system entirely so that even the power key  
  16. is out of commission.  This happens VERY often, like every  
  17. ten minutes or so.
  18. Further info:  there are a dozen nexts out there.  Several  
  19. people are working on them.  When you switch box, it  
  20. crashes on you again.  Nobody else's box crashes.  Well  
  21. actually, one other person has a similar crash, once, but  
  22. most are entirely unaffected. ps -aux shows only root and  
  23. the user's processes running.

  25. This raises several possibilities, some paranoid, some more  
  26. benign.
  27. (1) somebody is persecuting a particular user and causing  
  28. her system to crash, perhaps by rlogging in and causing a  
  29. system crash (but note that public sound and window server  
  30. preferences are switched off) and nobody else seems to be  
  31. logged in to these machines.
  32. (2) somebody is rlogging in and doing something that causes  
  33. a system crash without realizing that they're doing this.   
  34. But chances that they'd always log into a box used by the  
  35. same person and never other people seem pretty low.
  36. (3) there's a bug somewhere in the OS or the user's  
  37. filesystem is somehow corrupted.  The only things running  
  38. are edit and terminal.  Also mail and VirtSpace, I guess.
