- Unfortunately I missed the original post in this thread, but
- picking up here--I use Frame a lot to put together large books,
- and I do get a lot of crashes (I am submitting bug reports to
- Frame). These varying from just hanging (usually when "iconifying"
- a window opened from a book file), to crashing to loggin me out
- (killing the window server--see GR's follow-up post, thanks Glenn,
- I'll keep an eye out for that one.) BUT, to Frames credit I have
- NEVER lost more than a couple of minutes work (total!, but not
- counting "restart" time.) There is
- an autobackup feature and a crash recovery file (although I have
- found these to be messed up on occasion.) Hence, you should check
- to make sure these features are turned on.
-
- One problem with Frame is that it does not use a NeXT built
- interface (I believe this was discussed by Simson in a recent
- NeXTworld article.) Instead, Frame uses a "translator" from its
- interface to NeXTSTEP (to keep its interface consistant over all
- platforms.) I believe this causes a lot of its problems.
-
- Hints: ALWAYS save before using Services, especially calling
- Webster when the spell Checker is active.
- Always make sure you have an insertion point when copying tables
- between documents.
-
- Let me say that over all I have been pleased with FrameMaker, and
- especially its table feature (only one minor bug so far, and it
- does not cause a crash).
-
- Now to answer the question in the subject line: TeX (LaTeX actually)
- does tables (what ever happen to "Tables to Die For"?) that are
- very nice and fairly easy to generate. I have seen some guys at
- the office generate some very pleasing tables without much effort.
