- []My question is this, we have a network of NeXT machines each
- []running NeXTmail and their mailboxes are local on each users
- []machine. These people want to be able to read/reply to there
- []mail from on the road using either a notebook PC or a PowerBook
- []dialing in through a SLIP line. I have looked into running a POP
- []server on each machine and then using a POP SLIP client on the
- []portables but then either the mail remains in the mail spool to
- []be gotten a second time by the POP client or it is removed from the
- []spool not allowing incorporation into the Nextmail system. I
- []recall some mention of PINE in an earler posting, will that do
- []what we need.
-
- I had posted earlier to the effect that someone should consider using Elm,
- and setting its default directory for mail to be ~/Mailboxes/Active.mbox
- for each user. Elm easily supports multiple mail folders, so it will
- read in whatever is in /usr/spool/mail into its mailbox, and you can
- change to the NeXTmail mbox by just typing "c" for change folder and then
- "=mbox" when asked to specify the new folder. This puts you into the
- NeXTmail mbox and off you go. Elm is infinitely more powerful than the
- crummy /ucb/mail the NeXT comes with, and it should compile straight-
- forwardly on the NeXT.
-
- In response to my earlier post another fellow wrote in to the effect that
- PINE also did all of these things, and that he liked it better. I'm not
- familiar enough with PINE to give a comparison, but suggest you get either
- of the two, install it, and give it a try. If you do decide on Elm and
- have any problems feel free to drop me a note.

- Hope this is helpful --- tom
