- I've just placed Mesa 1.1 on the archives (sonata.cc.purdue.edu,
- 128.210.15.30; nova.cc.purdue.edu, 128.210.7.22; cs.orst.edu,
- 128.193.32.1).
-
- We're very proud of Mesa 1.1. Version AR-1 had lots of nice features, but
- it was just a start. Version 1.1 makes special use of the NeXT and shows
- off some very special, Mesa-only features.
-
- Version 1.1 supports cell shading. While this is not new, Mesa makes it
- very easy to shade cells. We have kept to the drag and drop paradigm. To
- change a cell's shading, just Alt-Drag color onto the cell.
-
- A spreadsheet first - the ability to change the color or background color
- of a cell from within the cell's formula. This allows you to make a cell
- red if a condition takes place in order to draw attention to the cell.
- This works especially well in conjunction with a real-time data feed.
-
- Speaking of real-time data feeds, the object library is really starting to
- take shape. Mesa is the first spreadsheet to allow live editing of
- spreadsheet data from within another application. You can build a custom
- application and include a live spreadsheet view. The MOLIDemo.app
- application demonstrates a live spreadsheet view.
-
- Being able to do great modeling is important, but so is the ability to
- access data. Mesa allows an unlimited number of SQL queries to be
- associated with each worksheet. The queries can be static or based on cell
- contents. If you have data in a Sybase database, you can use Mesa to
- access that data and then build models based on the data. If the data in
- the database changes, you can quickly load the new set of data in and your
- model will reflect the new data.
-
- We've done all of this in the month since Release AR-1. All the people who
- bought AR-1 get the upgrade to Release 1.1 for free.
-
- Mesa 1.1 is available in a student version for under a hundred bucks (to
- find out how much under, call NeXTConnection).
-
- There has been lots of feedback regarding Mesa. I hope that we could
- positively answer your questions. Things are going very well here at
- Athena Design. Our only problem is that we're growing faster than I
- expected. We're looking for customer service people. If you know of
- people who are good with spreadsheets, live in the Boston area, and would
- like to join a startup, please have them e-mail their resume to
- dpp@athena.com or fax it to 617.734.1130.
-
- Thanks to all the people that made Mesa possible and I hope you enjoy the
- program. Keep the feedback coming so we can make 1.2 even cooler.
