- Hi, I'm in the market for my very first PC. I've saved and saved (for years)
- and watched the PC market as it has evolved and even better, as prices
- have fallen through the floor. As it will become apparent, I don't know
- a lot about what I'm buying, thus this posting.
-
- After lots of looking around and asking friends for recommendations, I
- have probably decided on a Gateway 2000 486DX2/66mHz ISA machine.
- Several trade journals recommend the DX2 machines and all suggest that
- a *minimum* CPU cache of 128K is the way to go. Unfortunately, Gateway
- only offers 64K cache. Their sales representative suggests that I could
- get the cache increased but they do not currently do it. They even gave
- me the number of a guy who sells cache memory! I called him and he said
- that all I need to do was to pull 8 chips out and insert his 8 chips and
- cache would go from 64K to 256K! And all for $69.00 for the set of 8
- chips! Now this sounds too good to be true! Is this kosher? He did
- mention that a jumper would have to be changed and the books that come
- with the PC should show me how to do this. Is this standard or is there
- a possibility that the Gateway system doesn't have the sockets for the
- new (and larger) chips?
-
- EVERYTHING else in the lineup of features meets or exceeds my personal
- requirements for my new PC with the exception of the cache memory. Anybody
- done this, with success. Obviously no one has the system described above
- cause Gateway hasn't shipped the first one yet. They say in about 6 weeks.
-
- Still, if anyone can shed some light in this area, I would be most
- appreciative. I tried calling Gateway back but unfortunately they require
- that I speak with *my* sales rep who has gone for the holiday weekend. =-(
-
- Guess they are making money faster than they care for....
-
- You can reply directly back to me, or post, either way is greatly appreciated.
