- Well, I have received a few responses to my question on P/M.
- I think maybe restricting the scope of my question to one
- subsystem at a time might be more fruitful, so I'll start with
- disks.
-
- My MIPS systems use two types of disks:
- 2372-64|fujitsu 2372 (64 sectors) 824Mb: -- SMD
- 94601|cdc 94601 (1GB): -- SCSI
-
- As I understand it, drives that use stepper motors for head control
- lose track over time, and therefore need to be reformatted every
- 6 mo. to 1 yr. Voice coil drives, however are immune to this need.
- How do I know if these drives need reformatting? I have had 3 SMD
- disks "go bad" in about 3 years. The problem became evident when
- the console log started giving me --
- ipcs1ds2: error csr=0x4000 bn=1028368 statcode=83 recovered, errcode=0x1
- and things to that effect. Unfortunately, there is no documentation
- available (to my knowledge) that helps me decipher what is REALLY
- happening here. Anyway, the incidents increased, eventually the system
- crashed (we're talking weeks to months between first evidence and crash)
- and I took advantage of the "unscheduled downtime" to reformat the
- disks. Each time, the disks found some bad spots, and I was able to
- go back to work as normal. But in short order, the badspots increased
- to the point that I started having to make custom partitions to work
- around bad cylinder groups, and eventually trashing the disk and
- ordering new ones.
-
- An obvious side-benefit to reformatting the disks is that you dump
- and restore your file system, eliminating fragmentation. But if
- I have a disk that doesn't use stepper motors, I won't be doing that,
- will I?
-
- Summary:
- 1. Is it necessary to reformat disks periodically, if so, how often,
- and which disk types?
- 2. What is the threshold of fragmentation before doing a dump/restore
- to eliminate frags?
-
- I realize that #2 is possibly subjective, so send your gut feel.
- Please respond to werner@tron.bwi.wec.com . I will summarize.
