  12. I have discovered a really strange problem with System 7 that is being
  13. caused (apparently) by my external scsi disk.
  14.  
  15. Scenario: I have a remote Appleshare volume mounted. Under System 7, if
  16. I either try to create an alias on that volume or try to open a file on
  17. the volume with MS Excel (3 or 4) my systems hangs and I have to reboot.
  18. After extensive testing of software, re-installing system 7 and a
  19. systematic elimination process I isolated the problem to my external 210
  20. MB Quantum drive. If I run under system 6.0.7 - no problem. If I turn
  21. off my external drive (physically power down, just unmounting the volume
  22. doesn't help) - no problem. In addition, the behavior is very consistent
  23. - it happens when the operation (make alias or open file) is nearly
  24. complete - the open fails after the file has been opened but before the
  25. cursor returns, the make alias fails just before updating the screen
  26. with a new icon.

  28. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here? Any suggestions
  29. as to how to diagnose what my drive is doing to upset Sys 7 in those
  30. scenarios? Any ideas what system call finder's make alias and excel's
  31. open file routines have in common?

  33. I have spoken to Apple and gotten the usual non-help response " you
  34. gotta call our 900 number and pay for an answer". They told me to ask
  35. the net, so I am.
