- I think the problem is more general. I am having similar problems
- but without the alias complications. Each time my system crashes
- (yes it does from time to time (grrr)) some of the icons present
- on the desktop and some of them that were being displayed from
- open folders, revert to their generic form.

- If I rebuild the desktop, the icons return until the next reboot
- without a rebuild. I have fixed this problem long term by some
- (as yet) undetermined order of desktop rebuilds/mounts of the 4
- volumes concerned.

- My best guess is that there is a conflict between the icons that
- multiple desktops associate with a document when instances of that document
- appear on different volumes.
