- I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience with their StyleWriter.
-
- A few days ago, my StyleWriter began making horrible grinding noises when
- it was powered up. I took it in to my Apple dealer. According to the
- dealer, there are only two "field replacable units" in the StyleWriter:
- the "frame" and the logic board -- my frame was defective, and needed to be
- replaced at a cost of $309 plus tax. Ouch!
-
- Since the unit was only two and one-half months out of warranty, I called
- Apple Customer Service to protest the cost of repair and ask for a warranty
- extension. After a few more days, the response came back -- no such luck,
- fella! In fact, the Apple service rep pointed out to me that I would be
- better off buying a whole new StyleWriter, since the cost of the frame was
- close to the "street" price of the unit, and a new unit gives me a new
- one-year warranty, whereas the repair would only be good for 90 days.
-
- I have heard reports from various quarters, including an Apple dealer, that
- the problem with my unit is not unique. I now wonder how widespread this
- problem is.
-
- So, I'd like to hear from anyone else who has had a similar problem. I intend
- to write a letter to Apple as a last resort, and then consider other options.
- My immediate emotional reaction is to say that Apple ought to be forced to
- put a warning label on the printer and on all advertising for it, for instance:
-
- "WARNING: This unit is liable to self-destruct shortly after the warranty
- expires, and it will not be cost-effective to repair it. You ought to
- seriously consider buying an HP DeskWriter instead!"
-
- If this proves to be a common problem, I suspose there's a miniscule chance
- that we can get Apple to extend the warrenty for these failing units. Please
- respond, and I will summarize for the net. In you message, you ought to say
- whether or not I can cite your name in correspondence with Apple on this
- problem.
-
- Thanks!
