  15. I think I will just tell a story:

  17. I have a friend who is definitely not a Mac user. He works in a place
  18. where they produces maps, and they needed a system that could
  19. manipulate maps in 24 bit colour. The datafiles for producing
  20. these maps are about 20 - 60 MB in size, and they wanted to manipulate
  21. these maps with commercial drawing packages like Illustrator or
  22. Freehand or something similar. For speed they need to have all
  23. the data in RAM as they work.

  25. They set up a test which included a 50 Mz 486 and a NExT Station. After
  26. talking to me they also included a Quadra 700 (very reluctantly). All
  27. machines were equiped to handle 24 bit colour and with approx. 60-70
  28. MB RAM.

  30. The results:
  31. The Quadra and the NExT Station were about the same in speed, but the
  32. Quadra was very much cheaper(as far as I understood mainly  because of the 24
  33. bit
  34. colour requirement)! 
  35. The Windows machine couldn't handle the job at all because, as they said,
  36. when the datafiles were larger than 3-6 MB everything just stopped!

  38. This suggests to me a serious memory handling problem in Windows. So,
  39. theoretically
  40.  the 640k barrier probably doesn't exist, but there is a difference between
  41. theory and praxis.

  43. Oh, by the way - they did buy the Quadra! Not because it was a Mac (in fact
  44. they
  45. tried as hard as they could not to buy the Mac), but because it was the only
  46. machine that could do the job within reasonable cost!
