- Yes, having the OS in ROM gives you increased speed and a lot more
- free RAM (although some RAM is still used for OS 'workspace').
- However, the bad thing is, as you said, in OS upgrades. Upgrading
- ROM-based OS's is more expensive and more troublesome, and it would
- be especially for System 7 on the Mac. I'm an Atari user and new
- TOS ROM's end up costing $60, but that's peanuts compared to the
- Mac since System 7 is at least 4 and up to 10 times larger than
- Atari's TOS (depending on which TOS version), so the material cost
- of ROM's for System software would be a lot more plus I believe
- Apple would charge more for them than Atari does for their's (no
- flame intended). However, a possible benefit to ROM OS's is that
- they may be more intent to make sure the OS is as bug-free as
- possible so as to decrease the need for maintenance upgrades
- (Atari's only had about 4 or 5 TOS upgrades, though they've had
- about 9 TOS versions altogether for all their machines combined).
- If a maintenance/bug-fix upgrade was needed, it would most likely
- be a series of patch programs to run at bootup until a new ROM
- upgrade is felt necessary, so maybe Mac users would see an increase
- in INIT's. Do you know if the System 7 ROM's on these new machines
- are the 'new and improved' System 7? Apple's supposedly rewriting
- a lot of System 7 stuff so that disk access is faster and overhead
- is reduced, as well as some other improvements.
